Upscaling Strategies for an Urban Sharing Society in Wuppertal

Sharing has many different aspects, for example: What can be shared? Which system/ business model stands behind it? Who is using sharing services and why? How can a city foster sharing in its society and economy by adapting institutional and political settings? What are the sustainability impacts of sharing on the local level? How can sharing activities from the local level be scaled up? And which impact has this upscaling process?

These are only some of the questions that a newly formed research group will work on. The research group formed by the CSCP, the Wuppertal Institute and the Bergische Universität Wuppertal/ Transzent will analyse sharing on a local level with a strong focus on the city of Wuppertal. The 5-year research project “Upscaling strategies for an urban sharing society” (Urban Up) is funded by the Federal Ministry for research and education (BMBF). Its interdisciplinary team with two Post-doc and four PhD positions consists of political scientists, economists, sociologists and engineers, who will look at the topic from different perspectives.

The CSCP is contributing to the research on sharing lifestyles to understand why people are motivated to share goods, services, time, etc. and how a broader and more diverse target group might be reached. The Urban Up project is working together with many practice partners in Wuppertal to analyse sharing in different fields of our every-day life, e.g. car and bike sharing, co-living and co-working, tool sharing, food sharing, etc.
