RheinEnergie Workshop: Rethinking the Future of Selling Energy

Energy is used and needed everywhere: in homes, for production, and for mobility. Engineers are developing new, smarter ways to make energy available to contribute to a good life for their customers and citizens in general. In our innovative workshop with the RheinEnergie sales management team and :metabolon, we asked how an energy supplier can make the most meaningful contributions.

The energy industry is constantly changing, having to adapt to production conditions and customer demands. The necessity of the German Energiewende coupled with new possibilities through digitalisation is paving the way for novel energy generation structures and business models while calling new players onto the scene. In the joint workshop, we explored what this means for traditional players such as municipal utilities and developed new approaches and ideas.

:metabolon and its experts served as an ideal inspirational setting to showcase how a traditional sector – waste treatment – is applying new technologies and enters new partnerships for sustainable transition – circular resource management.

Participants were also called to action. In small teams, RheinEnergie employees refelected on the needs of specific core target groups through the CSCP’s Personas approach. How do the Personas imagine a good life? What do they really need and how/what can RheinEnergie contribute?

The results were not only concrete ideas for new services. The topics customer needs, potential for greater sustainability, new partnerships and business models were also broached. “For me, sustainability has always been more abstract and oriented towards environmental protection. Looking at good life and our contribution to it is a helpful and very motivating perspective,” said one participant after the workshop. The ideas will feed into the internal innovation management and be further developed.
