REWE’s PRO PLANET Council and Label Drives Sustainability in the Mass Market Forward

Over 50 sessions, relevant stakeholders from business, academia, and society have continuously discussed ways to improve the value chains of food products in the mass market under the umbrella of the PRO PLANET sustainability council, making it the pace-setting initiative for improving sustainability in the German food sector. To find out more about how well trust-based dialogue and exchange can drive the change towards a more sustainable future, read on!

2010 REWE -one of Germany’s major retailers- launched PRO PLANET, an ambitious and innovative sustainability label aiming to give consumers guidance on food-industry products with less harmful ecological and societal impacts.

Now, seven years and 50 council meetings later, PRO PLANET can show off a respectable track record in driving the change towards more sustainability in the food mass market. Over 600 products have been improved and labelled PRO PLANET, ranging from numerous fruits,  vegetables, meat and dairy products to products with more complex value chains like cookies. The PRO PLANET product range have been greatly appreciated by consumers, for example, PRO PLANET labelled chicken already accounts for 95% of overall chicken sales in REWE stores, showing impacts achievable even in challenging areas like meat production.

CSCP assisted the REWE Group from the start of the project by co-developing the methodology and the framework of PRO PLANET as well as hosting the bi-monthly council meetings at our premises in Wuppertal. At the end of March this year, we held –and celebrated- our 50th council session at our offices! It was a great opportunity to show how trust-based dialogue and exchange can drive positive change!
