Introducing Sustainable Lifestyle Activities to Vodafone Germany Employees

In the rush of daily life, going on business trips, commuting to work or having lunch at the canteen can easily be misconceived for mundane activities of little bearing. In truth, each of them is exemplary of lifestyle choices that have a significant impact on the carbon footprint, and therefore represent a great potential to trigger and accelerate change.

Mission Green is an innovative employee engagement programme designed to promote sustainable lifestyle choices for the approximately 16,000 Vodafone employees across Germany. The programme aims to seize the power of behavioral change in the reduction of carbon footprint, both for the company as well as the individual employees.

As a scientific and implementation partner, the CSCP supports the development of Vodafone’s Mission Green programme with its expertise on sustainable behavior patterns and by providing guidance in behavioural change. The Wuppertal Institute has provided estimations for carbon emission savings related to each action listed on the project.

Mission Green was launched in October 2019 with an eight-week kick-off phase, followed by a one-year consolidation phase. Throughout the programme, Vodafone employees have the opportunity to learn extensively about their personal CO2 footprint. The CSCP supports them to reduce the CO2 footprint by making shifts in their behavioral patterns. The programme is segmented into numerous ‘missions’, each aimed at a particular behavioral aspect. Employees can take part in over forty missions in the categories Mobility & Travel, Nutrition & Health, Shopping & Consumption, Housing & Energy, and Nature & Leisure via an app developed for this purpose. Simple, yet meaningful suggestions from the app include: Riding a bicycle to work, eating vegan food or setting up a video conference instead of flying to a meeting – all things that help to reduce the personal CO2 budget. In addition, there are a lot of interesting facts, as well as tips and tricks, to make everyday life more environmentally conscious. Moreover, the company helps its employees with a variety of other offers, from company bicycle leasing and car sharing to subsidies for public transport tickets. In cases when flights are unavoidable for certain business meetings, the company is committed to offset the emitted CO2 in other ways. Weekly actions on the Vodafone campus support the programme, including the presentation of low-carbon alternatives by cooperation partners like electric scooter manufacturers, farmers from the region or e-bike suppliers.

“We have set ourselves ambitious goals when it comes to sustainability. We are significantly increasing our pace on the road to becoming a green company”, says Hannes Ametsreiter, CEO of Vodafone Germany. Mission Green is part of ‘GIGA Green’, a supporting pillar of the Vodafone corporate strategy. The final goal of Mission Green is bold: Vodafone wants to become a green company, based on measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By 2022, the company aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 92%.
