Integrating Consumer Insights into the Circular Economy Transition: The CSCP Organises Stakeholder Meeting in Brussels on 25 October 2018

Following the Circular Economy Action Plan, business and policy makers have been driving the development and implementation of actions for closing the loop. However, consumer behaviour sometimes becomes the hurdle, for example, with low acceptance rates of circular solutions, limited repair actions, or lack of participation in recycling programmes. As this severely curtails any efforts in moving towards a circular economy, we ask, “What can be done?”

How might consumers be empowered to become active enablers and contributors to the circular economy? In particular, how can businesses and policymakers better integrate consumer insights into their actions to achieve higher circular value? To explore the answers to these questions, the CSCP will organise a stakeholder meeting – Consumer Insights into Circular Economy (CIICE) – jointly with the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) in Brussels on 25 October 2018.

Invited stakeholders have developed various research approaches and tested measures to drive consumer-supported CE development, such as: the EESC call for applying nudge thinking to EU policies,  EC Chafea’s research on the effects of consumer behaviour on the Circular Economy*, the European Commission’s addition of societal behaviours as one of the CE transition indicators, and various scientific research on consumer behaviour related to recycling, reuse or sustainable consumption. This stakeholder workshop will foster dialogue and exchange on good practice and key learnings to align efforts and drive more effective policymaking and collaboration for the user-centric circular economy.

This stakeholder workshop builds on the Circular Economy Stakeholder Conference session “Overcoming Cultural Challenges in the Circular Transition”. As a Coordination Group Member of the European Commission Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform, the CSCP aims to inspire and facilitate stakeholders to integrate consideration of consumer culture and behaviour in circular economy discussion and actions.
