Inherit Publishes Report and Videos: “Reaching The Triple-Win”

The INHERIT positive scenarios publication and videos give us a glimpse at the future. In a systemic manner, four different types of societies are carved out, in order to show us what it might look like to enable a good life by identifying and harnessing leverage points for systemic and effective change.

“We’re lucky nowadays. There wasn’t always so much green space around here. It’s much calmer now and more relaxed. Less traffic and less stress” Isabella, 59, Less is more to me’.

This is what Isabella, a (fictional) person living in 2040 tells us about her present. Isabella, like Adam, Milan and Tereza are part of the recently published INHERIT “Reaching the tripple-win” report and they share with you what is like to live in 2040.

The report portrays four positive scenarios of a healthier, more equitable and sustainable Europe in 2040. Fast forwarding into the future, the report aims to inspire strategic interventions, innovations and action plans as well as behaviour change for better future livelihoods.

Diverging in social dynamics (collective versus individualistic) and driving sector (public versus private) the scenarios differ in the implemented approaches for reaching this triple-win. The ‘My life between realities’ and ‘Less is more to me’ scenarios are examples of an individualistic social dynamic.  Digitalisation, including virtual and augmented realities, connectivity and personalisation characterise ‘My life between realities’ while sufficiency, elevated self-awareness and mindfulness as well as less material ownership are the main principles of the ‘Less is more to me’ scenario. Scenarios ‘One for all, all for one’ and ‘Our Circular Community’ are based on a collective social dynamic. The former is based on elevated locality, participatory decision making and communality, while the latter thrives on (multi-stakeholder) co-creation, citizen sciences and circular economy.

Guiding through these scenarios are the above mentioned characters, which give you a sense of what it is like to live in that specific future society. What’s more, you can look at their respective lives in these videos.

Achieving these visions requires changes in citizens’ behavioural patterns. Linking the scenario narratives with the INHERIT behaviour change framework supports this understanding and brings us closer to healthier, more equitable and sustainable lifestyles.

Read the full scenario narratives here and find out more how we developed the scenarios, and what they imply for interventions, innovations, action plans and policies.
