The CSCP’s First Circular Economy Mapping Exercise Finds 50 Initiatives in Wuppertal

The next generation of our economy was mapped in Wuppertal on 7 February 2018, when local stakeholders came together to take stock of the circular economy initiatives already in place – and discuss the future of circularity.

The Mapping Exercise in Wuppertal brought together local professionals working on the advancement of a circular economy under the umbrella of the CSCP’s R2Pi project. During the event, we focussed on mapping initiatives along the whole circular economy value chain, ranging from design & materials, manufacturing & logistics, sales & business models, product life extension, recycling, and across many industries, like textile and fashion, food, electronics, packaging and retail. The group mapped over 50 initiatives in Wuppertal, which shows the exemplary work done in this city alone. Check out the initiatives that we mapped and add any that we might have missed by contacting Piyush Dhawan, Research Fellow at the CSCP through the Germany Chancellor Fellowship Programme.

Participants thought that the circular economy does not just need new business models but also attitude change. Today, it is easy for people and business to act independently, almost anonymously, but the circular economy requires relationships and interdependences. The group was also aware that visibility and a direct connection to people’s lives is important to further acceptance of circular economy initiatives.

“Car sharing is not only about not owning a car, it is about not having to take care of the car maintenance in any way, thus avoiding spending time and attention on it” – Tobias M. Freitag.

The Mapping Exercise at the CSCP was part of the Circular Economy Mapping Week, an initiative of the Circular Economy Club, an international network of circular economy professionals and organisations. Information gathered in these sessions will be made available online at the beginning of April, sign up to receive more information here. It is a collaborative effort to advance knowledge of existing Circular Economy Initiatives and inspire new ones.

The CSCP was happy to host this local edition of a worldwide collaborative effort. Working towards a circular economy is one of our central goals and we support the transition by bringing together stakeholders across value chains, sectors and continents. Furthermore, we draw from many years of experience in identifying and implementing sustainable business models that have the potential to realise more circularity.
