High-level German Stakeholders Taking Action Against Food Waste

The German Steering Committee of the EU research project REFRESH successfully finalised the Framework for Action to combat food waste across the whole value chain. Meeting for the second time, the Committee members include Metro, Nestlé Germany, Penny, Sodexo, the relevant ministries on the national and the regional level, the German Council for Sustainable Development, Verbraucherzentrale NRW and FH Münster University of applied Sciences, supported by Foodsharing e.V., WWF Germany and the University Witten/Herdecke.

Volker Mehl, a Ayurveda chef  shared his  insights about the connection of cooking and lifestyles through food waste.

The Framework for Action sets criteria to define projects to reduce food waste at the relevant food value chain stages, e.g.:

  • by supporting consumers to actively reduce their food waste
  • by measuring food waste streams in supermarkets and then changing activities or
  • by pointing out to canteens what they could do to address this issue.

With the finalized version, pilot projects will be defined to achieve the SDG goal 12.3. of reducing food waste by 50% until 2030.

The Framework for Action is open for all organisations that would like to contribute to this goal.

The next meeting can be expected in the beginning of October. If you also wish to attend please address to us.
