The poor people are highly dependent on their environment and eco-system to generate their income. The poor people are highly dependent on their environment and eco-system to generate their income. Reducing poverty in most cases means to expand consumption and production, which is linked to exploiting the natural resources and therefore harms the ecosystem. Sustainable consumption and production (SCP) can break this cycle by taking these issues into account and therefore contribute to overcoming poverty. However, companies have to understand the markets and find ways on how to create value and meet the needs of the costumers in a sustainable way.

The "Impact of Base-of-the-Pyramid Ventures" Conference, held in Delft (Netherlands) from the 16th to the 18th November 2009, will deal with these issues and address the following question: How to define, measure, and optimise towards enduring value creation of Base of the Pyramid ventures? The UNEP / Wuppertal Institute Collaborating Centre on Sustainable Consumption and Production (CSCP) is an organising partner of this international conference and will host two workshops.

Experienced keynote-speakers will share their innovative insights in the mornings and will be followed by workshops, networking events and a final debate. The CSCP will host two workshops on Sustainable Consumption and Production. The first addresses "Sustainable entrepreneurship" and will focus on how to create inclusive and different consumption and how to enhance poverty alleviation. It especially focuses on small-scale ventures and their role in engaging Base-of-the-Pyramid markets with a closer look on Asia and Africa. The "Business models in large businesses and multi-nationals"-workshop, also organised by the CSCP, will explore sustainability and consumption challenges, overcoming existing barriers and implement successful practices in large-scale ventures.

Registration is available under http://www.aanmelder.nl/bopimpact.
The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), The UNEP/Wuppertal Institute Collaborating Centre on Sustainable Consumption and Production (CSCP) and the Regional Environmental Center (REC) Country Office Hungary are pleased to invite you to the workshop Civil society organisations for energy efficiency and sustainable transport on Wednesday 23 September 2009 from 10.00 a.m. to 12.15 a.m. at the Quai aux Briques (Sainte Catherine), Brussels, Belgium in the context of the EESC Energy Efficiency Days (www.eesc.europa.eu/save-it)

The objective of this workshop is to bring together civil society organisations, policy makers and researchers to discuss about how to promote energy efficiency in the mobility sector. The role of civil society organisations (CSOs) in promoting more sustainable consumer behaviour is crucial as they have close contacts to a broad range of different consumers. However, they need to liaise more closely with policy makers in order to really make an impact. The two-year project “Civil Society Platform on Sustainable Consumption and Production”, funded under the EU’s 7th Research Framework Programme, has created a European dialogue platform for CSOs to build capacity for influencing political decisions and identifying research needs in order to change consumption and production patterns. This event is one of the opportunities offered by the project to collaborate directly with the EU policy makers in the field of sustainable mobility.
The workshop is part of the “Save it! EESC Energy Efficiency Days“ (http://www.eesc.europa.eu/save-it), to mobilise all sectors of civil society, in particular individuals and households, to make them involved in and responsible for efforts to boost energy efficiency. This workshop supports the overall objectives of the event by offering a possibility to meet experts working on mobility issues in different organisations and to discuss on what kind of actions and tools are needed to become more effective in promoting energy-efficient transport. The workshop consists of expert panel followed by interactive world café discussion.

But how to protect the planet and create a green economy that will lead to long-term prosperity?

Reaching a deal by the time the meeting ends on December 18 will depend not only on political negotiations but also on public pressure from around the globe. To get public support, the United Nations has launched “Seal the Deal”, a campaign that encourages users to sign an online, global petition which will be presented to world leaders.
As an introduction to the subject the students will participate in the first two workshop days of the international congress “The Future of Sustainable Products and Services” Innovation Conference, 28./29.09.09, where renowned experts on business, science, ecology and sustainability will present the latest research results on sustainable issues. On the third day the students will be grouped into teams (4 to 6 students). They will be introduced to the working methodology of the workshops, which will continue for 4 days in total. An experienced team of professors will guide the workshops.

At the end of each workshop day the students will have the possibility to share their ideas and their experience with an expert in eco-efficiency, like Prof. Dr. Schmidt-Bleek (President, Factor 10 Institute) and eco-business, like Michael Radau, (CEO, SuperBioMarkt AG). The team work will end with a presentation of the elaborated concepts. Finally a discussion will take place that relates the concepts of the students to the criteria of sustainability.

This unique event brought together more than 30 key actors, including major retailers and manufacturers. Participants discussed how to improve and facilitate communication of product life cycle information, shared information on life cycle approaches and identified strategies to foster sustainable production and consumption patterns.
The workshop lasted one and a half days. On the first day the focus was on understanding the opportunities behind the life cycle thinking in the retail sector. The second day was dedicated to collating retailers' and manufacturers' perspectives. More than ten different interventions with many examples and insights into the current state of life cycle management opened the doors for an exciting discussion about the challenges of effective communication of product chain information both within the supply chain and to consumers. The workshop was completed with an outlook on future forms of partnership and their possible contribution to an enhanced communication along the value chain.

Sharing of progress and ideas at an international conference held in Vilnius, Lithuania 19th-20th March 2008. Discussing how Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) can become a reality was the focus of the international conference on SCP held this year from 19th-20th March in Vilnius, Lithuania. Around 150 experts from national public institutions, civil society and businesses gathered to exchange information, experience and suggestions on different approaches to SCP in business and policy.

The focus of this event drew on the results of an SCP conference held last year in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The agenda of this year’s conference in Vilnius included five main focal points. Firstly, trends of economic development and current business models and their influence on SCP were discussed. Secondly, a dialogue regarding orientation of consumers towards sustainable consumption was initiated. Thirdly, the exchange of views on good practice in SCP in different countries was carried out. Fourthly, recommendations for the implementation of the EU Action Plan on SCP were exchanged and finally the focus on SCP in Lithuania, at both a national and local level, including the collaboration between public authorities, business and civil society was addressed.

The programme involved presentations from numerous experts of varying disciplines from global trends in SCP (Michael Kundt, Wuppertal, CSCP) to patterns of SCP in Lithuania (Prof. Romualdas Juknys, Vytautas Magnus University, Lithuania). Other talks focused on Status of the SCP Action Plan (Jakub Wejchert, DG ENV, European Commission), Lessons learnt - The Slovenia meeting (Alenka Burja, Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning, Slovenia; Pawel Kazmierczyk, EEA), the past and the present of SCP (Prof. Maurie Cohen, University of Leeds, UK), SCP in business (Jörg Schafer, European Aluminium Association) or provided case studies of successful sustainability projects such as the Congestion Charge in London (James Mead, London Government UK) or Edinburgh as an example of a sustainable city (Courtney Peyton, Thirdwave UK).

The programme also included an arena conference addressing questions of economic growth and consumer behaviour in relation to SCP. A discussion of driving factors and barriers to SCP, as well as larger questions of whether a consumer society can be oriented to sustainable consumption at all was also addressed in the form of a round table discussion. Results and Summaries of the conference will be available in due course.

Greenpeace also regularly publishes the "Guide to Greener Electronics", a company rating on product sustainability. It is now published in the 7th edition, and focuses on ban of toxic substances and recyclability. Future versions will include energy efficiency as a criterion, also questioning companies on energy consumption in the companies' supply-chains.
