CSCP brings together low-carbon city initiatives in China

On April 15, 2013 thirty leading low-carbon city development experts and international representatives convened in Beijing to exchange perspectives on the future of China's urbanisation megatrend.
On April 15, 2013 thirty leading low-carbon city development experts and international representatives convened in Beijing to exchange perspectives on the future of China's urbanisation megatrend. The CSCP and Tsinghua moderators helped this leading group lay a foundation for future collaboration efforts.

Interactive workshop enables co-creation of tangible outputs
As a first step, moderators Professor Wang Can (Tsinghua University) and Sebastian Philipps (CSCP) facilitated an exercise to map existing Chinese low-carbon city initiatives and the range of mechanisms that have been applied to achieve their low carbon goals. Together, participants explored ways to foster exchange and synergies among projects and their diverse implementation mechanisms. Focus areas for the workshop included pilot implementation, scientific research, stakeholder dialogue, capacity building, and the application of market and economic instruments.

By means of a World Café session, the group formulated concrete pathways toward the institutionalisation of the exchange of ideas and the involvement of additional stakeholders. During a final group session, representatives agreed on a set of criteria for viable exchanges and designed their first transfer of ideas around these criteria. In the end both the Chinese and Western participants stressed their strong support for the interactive and co-creation oriented format, and underlined their confidence in building upon this foundation in the future.

Significant demand for collaboration to support low-carbon cities in China
The workshop attracted triple the number of participants than originally planned. In all some thirty representatives attended the workshop. Attendees included the World Resource Institute, WWF, the EC Delegation in Beijing, GIZ, Ecofys, Germanwatch, E3G, CER, the Chinese Society of Sustainable Development, the Administrative Centre for China's Agenda 21, CECEP, CMA, NRDC, the Climate Group, CANGO, and Stiftung Mercator.

Despite the significant demand, workshop organisers needed to limit the number of participants to retain the workshop’s desired interactive format. This popularity and the results of the day revealed a substantial stakeholder interest in collaborating and the large potential for synergies in China. Workshop organisers from the Wuppertal Institute, the moderating partners, and Stiftung Mercator, the project donor, are now working to evaluate potential next steps toward further exchange, collaboration and institutionalisation.

Project experience motivated the workshop
The inspiration for this workshop on Low Carbon City Initiatives evolved out of the experience of the Low Carbon Future Cities Project that was also funded by Stiftung Mercator. That project supported collaboration on low-carbon development in Wuxi (PR China) and Düsseldorf (Germany).

These questions will be discussed at the Sharing Economy Conference in Berlin on May, 13th 2012 with a variety of case studies, workshops and jam sessions for start-ups, among them a CSCP-led workshop.

Some topics will be:

Sharing Economy as a New Business Strategy

How to increase value by sharing products? This was the core question of two sessions at the World Business Dialogue on March 14, 2013 in Cologne. Participants from business and university discussed the concept, the success factors, and barriers of a sharing economy at a global level.

How to increase value by sharing products? This is the core question, which international participants discussed in two sessions hosted by the CSCP at the World Business Dialogue.

Shareconomy is the key theme of the CEBIT 2013. Collaborative Consumption has been considered one of the key concepts that might change the world we live in by the Time Magazine. In two sessions participants from business and university discussed the concept, the success factors, and barriers of a sharing economy at a global level on March 14, 2013 in Cologne. Speakers where representatives from various initiatives of the Sharing Economy:

Michael Minis, CEO of Tamyca (peer-to-peer car sharing)

Roman Padiwy and Christian Schmitt from Crealiity (swapping of capabilities and skills)

Christina Pielmeyer, DriveNow (car sharing founded by BMW and Sixt)

Kim Tjoa and Laury Zwart, Floow2 (B2B-online market place)

The participants discussed what is needed for consumers to move towards a Sharing Economy, such as trust, transparency, physical communities and best practice examples. From an environmental perspective there are benefits, like reduced emissions, less resources, product innovation; yet also framework conditions such as infrastructures need to be considered for these benefits to play out. It was controversially discussed, if the sharing economy also works for emerging economies and developing countries.

B2B Shareconomy: With trust and flexibility
As a key aspect it was stated that sharing often is even more embedded in the culture, however parameters, such as trust building might work differently, which is important as trust is the key to adapt solutions to cultural contexts. Last but not least results of the discussions showed, that collaborative consumption can also work for business to business, especially for SMEs, yet this also requires a change in values and higher flexibility in the companies.

Take the challenge: Tell your sustainable success story

In the SPREAD Sustainable Lifestyles 2050 project we are mapping the road towards sustainable lifestyles in Europe in the year 2050. But how could we know, what might or might not happen in more than 35 years? What helped us foresee a possible future were pioneer projects that are already making European lives more sustainable today. Now the EU Commission invites all those green initiatives to tell their success stories.

In the
project we are mapping the road towards sustainable lifestyles in Europe in the year 2050. But how could we know, what might or might not happen in more than 35 years? What helped us foresee a possible future were pioneer projects that are already making European lives more sustainable today.

When can we have a world we like?
These promising examples show, that we could have a world we like with a climate we like already today. Now the EU decided to take it on a more practical level with the EU Commission's climate action campaign A world you like. With a climate we like.

"Move beyond mere talking"
In this context, Connie Hedegaard, EU Commissioner for Climate Action, has just launched a low-carbon contest, calling on creative and innovative minds from across the EU to put their existing green initiatives to the test. Commissioner Hedegaard said:

"The Challenge is a great opportunity to move beyond mere talking about climate change. By submitting your project, you help us show that building a world we like with a climate we like is both feasible and affordable. And it won't make our lives dull and grey.”

Tell your story and gain recognition!
During the next three months, you can submit your own low-carbon success story for the World You Like Challenge. All projects, big or small, coming from individuals or organisations based in an EU Member State will be considered, provided that their main aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This could be an electric bike that serves to transport goods; an innovative production process that drives down greenhouse gas emissions and energy bills; sustainable buildings or heating solutions. Across Europe there is a plethora of practical examples of a low-carbon way of life that help the climate while also improving our quality of life. The World You Like Challenge aims at providing a platform to showcase these projects and to honour the most creative, practical and effective ones.

Listen up, Bulgaria, Italy, Lithuania, Poland and Portugal!
The campaign has a special focus on five countries – Bulgaria, Italy, Lithuania, Poland and Portugal. In these countries, national winners will see their projects featured in a national billboard campaign in autumn 2013. Moreover the three overall winners will be honoured at the Sustainia Award Ceremony in Copenhagen in October 2013.

Background:
The contest is part of the campaign A world you like. With a climate you like, which the CSCP is a partner of. Since its launch in October 2012, the campaign has attracted more than 20.000 followers on social media and more than 130 official partners including public authorities, non-governmental organisations, academia and businesses. It aims to showcase existing cost-efficient solutions for achieving the EU's objective of an 80-95% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, as well as to encourage new solutions.

A key challenge for any development programme is to scale up successful approaches and methodologies to speed up the path to sustainable development. Therefore the SWITCH-Asia Network Facility, lead by the CSCP, distills the lessons learned from the SWITCH-Asia project. In order to take it one step further, our team wanted to find out, what it takes to stick to the promising practices developed in the project. A series of scaling up reports containing the results is out now.

The projects funded under the SWITCH-Asia programme should employ ‘scaling-up mechanisms’ to multiply, enlarge and spread existing good practices. The projects might scale up ‘horizontally’ and/or ‘vertically’. Horizontal scaling up (or ‘scaling-out’) refers to the gradual roll-out of activities within a sector or to a wider geographic area. Vertical scaling-up focuses more on organisations and frameworks at local, regional and/or national levels, involving both actors in the direct supply chain and ‘enablers’ such as government and financial institutions.

Projects apply their own approach to scaling up, bringing lasting impact to a wider geographic area than originally addressed, to a critical portion of a sector, and to a large number of consumer groups.

In 2010, the CSCP launched a multi-year analysis of how these scaling up mechanisms were contributing to the effective mainstreaming of sustainable consumption and production in society.

Five major areas emerged:

Sustainable infrastructure projects often come along with innovative ideas. Still neglected is the financing part. Where does the money come from to put these sustainable ideas in execution? The Global Energy Basel (GEB) Conference 2013 wants to bring ideas, needs, and finance together.

On a Capacity Building Day prior to the conference, senior decision-makers from the public and private sectors along with entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to sharpen their understanding of sustainability, risk migration of projects and how both is interlinked.

„How do sustainable consumption and lifestyles trigger investment?“ This will be another topic of the Capacity Building Day, answered by a CSCP speaker. Furthermore, participants will be introduced to the GEB Grading Tool, the concept of sustainable infrastructure and self assessment of a project.
.

The GEB summit will feature a mix of participants from Asia, Latin America, North America, Africa and Europe and will be a great opportunity for networking and meaningfully exploring business ideas from across the world. At the following conference Investment Forums, sustainable energy projects will be presented to investors.

The outstanding board looked together with all online participants at how business can help nudge consumers in the right direction, focusing on the role that marketing and communications strategies can play. What products would help make sustainable actions occur naturally, rather than with conscious effort from the consumer, and where do government policy and new frameworks enter the equation?

What happened in Rio…

The famous saying “what happens in…, stays in…” does not apply for what happened in June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, as the outcomes and agreements of discussions there are to be heard in every corner of the world and transformed into tangible actions.

The famous saying “what happens in…, stays in…” does not apply for what happened in June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, as the outcomes and agreements of discussions there are to be heard in every corner of the world and transformed into tangible actions.

There was indeed a lot going on, from a myriad of side events to the official talks to formulate the document '
'. In this document Sustainable Consumption and Production (paragraph 224–226) is rectified as a priority for which a 10-year framework of programs is needed.

Role of the CSCP
The CSCP was the proud host, co-host and participant of several of these events, among which, the scenarios of SPREAD, the Global Network on Sustainable Lifestyles and the Global Network on Innovation for Entrepreneurship, were launched.
