In today’s world there are over 1,2 billion people living from less then 1 US$ per day. The poor people are highly dependent on their environment and eco-system to generate their income. Reducing poverty in most cases means to expand consumption and production, which is linked to exploiting the natural resources and therefore harms the ecosystem. Sustainable consumption and production (SCP) can break this cycle by taking these issues into account and therefore contribute to overcoming poverty. However, companies have to understand the markets and find ways on how to create value and meet the needs of the costumers in a sustainable way.
The "Impact of Base-of-the-Pyramid Ventures" Conference, held in Delft (Netherlands) from the 16th to the 18th November 2009, will deal with these issues and address the following question: How to define, measure, and optimise towards enduring value creation of Base of the Pyramid ventures? The UNEP / Wuppertal Institute Collaborating Centre on Sustainable Consumption and Production (CSCP) is an organising partner of this international conference and will host two workshops.
Experienced keynote-speakers will share their innovative insights in the mornings and will be followed by workshops, networking events and a final debate. The CSCP will host two workshops on Sustainable Consumption and Production. The first addresses "Sustainable entrepreneurship" and will focus on how to create inclusive and different consumption and how to enhance poverty alleviation. It especially focuses on small-scale ventures and their role in engaging Base-of-the-Pyramid markets with a closer look on Asia and Africa. The "Business models in large businesses and multi-nationals"-workshop, also organised by the CSCP, will explore sustainability and consumption challenges, overcoming existing barriers and implement successful practices in large-scale ventures.
