The CSCP prepared a background paper entitled "Sustainable Energy Consumption" for the European Conference under the Marrakech Process on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP). This event took place in Berlin on 13-14 December 2005 with attendance of 70 experts from around Europe. The "UNEP/Wuppertal Institute Collaborating Centre on Sustainable Consumption and Production" (CSCP) started with an opening ceremony and a press conference on 25 November 2005. Prof. Dr. Klaus Töpfer, Executive Director of UNEP, and Prof. Dr. Peter Hennicke, President of the Wuppertal Institute, signed the Memorandum of Foundation. “We should not be afraid to wish that everyone in the world became a consumer. The integration of SCP into Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers will at the focus of a guidance document currently being under development by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the CSCP.
The paper will lay the basis for implementation pilot projects undertaken by UNEP. Read more
Among its first activities, the CSCP was involved in writing the Discussion Paper serving as the background document to the 2nd International Expert Meeting on The 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production. This major event of the Marrakech process took place in San José, Costa Rica, from the 5th to the 8th of September 2005.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Wuppertal Institute (WI) have established the UNEP/Wuppertal Institute Collaborating Centre on Sustainable Consumption and Production (CSCP).
