EFFICIENT USE OF ENERGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MEXICO (UNAM)

CSCP und Ö-Quadrat (Freiburg) implemented a ‘lighthouse’ pilot project at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) to develop and demonstrate instruments to reach an efficient and rational use of energy. The project explored the feasibility of new instruments (e.g. energy-efficiency CDMs) with local partners from the University and the Mexican government, and prepared the results and other promising examples for a collection of case studies to contribute to international discussions, including the Marrakech Process and the CSD meetings.

At the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), which is being attended by about 300,000 students, approximately 400,000 inefficient T12-lamps are installed. In this project, the lighting in two buildings was refitted with new lighting equipment, and the results communicated to stakeholders inside and outside the university.

The implementation of the pilot refitting demonstrated the potential for energy savings and the economic efficiency of the measures. Furthermore, the activities demonstrated how improved illumination can improve learning conditions and reduce maintenance costs. The involvement of the technical faculty as well as communication measures undertaken by the CSCP assured advanced refitting of the lighting system and practical information for students about efficient illumination at the university.

To extend the effects of the project beyond the university, the CSCP developed a best practice handbook for application in the Mexican context and in addition to organising a series of local workshops and seminars. An international publication with best practice cases, including the Mexican pilot, was also be developed and presented in international forums.
