Celebrating the 50th PRO PLANET Sustainability Council Session

At the end of March this year, CSCP and REWE are celebrating our 50th council session! We are delighted to share how our ongoing collaboration using trust-based dialogue and exchange is driving the change towards a more sustainable future.

In 2010, REWE, one of Germany’s major retailers, launched PRO PLANET, an ambitious and innovative sustainability label with the aim to give consumers guidance towards products with less harmful ecological and societal impacts in the food industry. The uniqueness of PRO PLANET lies in its approach: Together with the CSCP, REWE established a multi-stakeholder sustainability council consisting of representatives from five renown German and Austrian NGOs. Within the council, all actors bring their individual expertise to jointly formulate necessary and efficient measures to reduce harmful social and ecological impacts stemming from a broad spectrum of REWE’s different ranges.

The initiative has continued to grow since its inception. Now, over 130 different products have been made more sustainable by implementing measures to reduce their respective Hotspots. The CSCP assisted the REWE Group from the start by co-developing the methodology and the PRO PLANET label framework.  We are also hosting the bi-monthly council meetings at our premises in Wuppertal.
