SCP and Climate Change (Blog Action Day)

As part of the Blog Action Day on Climate Change, we at the CSCP want to show how our line of work - namely sustainable consumption and production (or in short: SCP) - has an effect on the climate. Moving consumption and production towards a sustainable path is a complex issue and it involves a lot of people and organisations from different backgrounds.

From CEOs of big companies to consumers at a supermarket, from large industrial producers to local civil society organisations (CSOs). Because we realise that we all need to share the responsibility.

Let's take for example the cotton T-Shirt. Even though the production of a T-Shirt is very energy intensive, the washing of the clothes is also a big environmental issue. It makes a huge difference in energy consumption - and therefore greenhouse gas emissions - to wash the clothes at 30 degrees or 80 degrees. Furthermore what happens after the T-Shirt is worn out? Is it thrown away? Or will it be incinerated? As you can see, even the seemingly simple case of T-Shirt is already a bit complex when you take a deeper look.

That's why we at the CSCP are working daily with our different partners around the world - national ministries, local government, private companies large and small, civil society organisations with different areas of expertise - to make SCP happen. That's why our projects range from working on environmental technologies with textile producers in Pakistan to cooperating with regional governments in China in order to exchange knowledge on SCP issues to facilitating roundtables for researchers and CSOs in Europe to hosting sustainable entrepreneur workshops for university students in Mauritius - because all these things are connected and we need a holistic approach to tackle the challenges.

One of our most recent publications shows how sustainable consumption and production are linked together, we welcome you to take a look into A Key Solution to Climate Change: Sustainable Consumption and Production - Making The Link.

Finally, to visualise these interrelations, we think that the video "The Story of Stuff" with Annie Leonard (though it is specifically to the US) does show how many things are connected and that we all need to work together towards SCP. We hope you can take 21 minutes of your time to watch this interesting video!
