Tomoo Machiba works for the CSCP as a Senior Consultant.
His main tasks at the centre include the development of sustainable consumption and production policies and implementation tools for policy makers in developing countries, the exploration of options to improve transparency in the product value chain and to encourage consumers to make conscious choices, research in the field of scaling up sustainable design, architecture and spatial planning initiatives, etc. His past experiences include benchmarking and advising on corporate accountability and sustainability reporting as well as the development of social responsibility strategies and the coordination of stakeholder engagement for major companies.
Before joining the CSCP, he worked from October 2002 as a programme coordinator for GRI. His main responsibilities included the coordination of the development of the GRI framework (guidelines, supplements and protocols) and the stakeholder engagement process (stakeholder council, feedback and regional outreach) together with extensive research on corporate sustainability reporting trends. He also has developed strategies for working with other global initiatives such as the ISO, the UN Global Compact, OECD, and others. Earlier in his career he was involved in a series of projects with SustainAbility Ltd. including the Global Reporters benchmarking (1997 and 2002). From 1999 to 2001, he was involved in the Jubilee 2000 Coalition (third world debt relief) as a special advisor, co-ordinating one of the world's most successful NGO campaigns at the G8 Summit and other international forums.
Tomoo Machiba was awarded an MPhil in Development Studies from the Institute for Development Studies, University of Sussex. Later he continued academic research on sustainable production and consumption at the Department of Geography, University College London, in parallel to his job assignments.
