A SMART GUIDEBOOK FOR SMEs

In cooperation with ecosign design school, Cologne, Germany.

The CSCP has started developing a self-help guidebook provisionally entitled “Do SMART Business – Week by Week” for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) around the world. This guidebook aims to introduce the basics of environmental practice and social responsibility for managers and employees of SMEs, and includes related examples, commentaries and tips for action. As one of the components of the SMART (Sustainability for the Small and Medium Sized Enterprises committed to Accountability, Responsibility and Transparency) project, this guidebook will be developed based on our experience with the Efficient Entrepreneur Calendar by expanding the scope of the issues from eco-efficiency towards corporate responsibility.

The guidebook is designed to provide 52 actions (one per week) which SMEs can implement in their operations to improve their environmental and social performance. Each action will be presented on a double page which contains short texts with an illustration, a photo or a picture that attracts the reader’s attention. The text is written in an easily accessible style, avoiding jargon, and using visual images. Where helpful, additional information, links or tools will also be provided. At the end of the guidebook, a tool for self-evaluation of the achievement will also be offered. In contrast to the other existing tools and publications, this guidebook will target new audiences - ordinary managers and employees in SMEs who are not familiar with sustainable development issues.

The CSCP has drafted many of the actions with financial support from the UNEP and the publication of the guidebook is planned for 2009.
