The CSCP presented the “Human Development through the Market“ (HDtM) approach at UNEP’s 9th International Seminar on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP9), held on 12-13 December 2006 in Arusha, Tanzania. HDtM covers market-based environmentally and socially responsible activities that empower the poor to meet their basic needs and introduces innovative business model to entrepreneurs, National Cleaner Production Centres (NCPCs) and other relevant intermediaries such as financial institutions and business associations.

The background paper to the International Seminar consists of a conceptual introduction to HDtM and good practice case studies in the area of Agriculture and Food, Tourism, Waste, and Energy. It also proposes practical steps for entrepreneurs to integrate the HDtM ap-proach in new business projects.
