Sharing of progress and ideas at an international conference held in Vilnius, Lithuania 19th-20th March 2008.
Discussing how Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) can become a reality was the focus of the international conference on SCP held this year from 19th-20th March in Vilnius, Lithuania. Around 150 experts from national public institutions, civil society and businesses gathered to exchange information, experience and suggestions on different approaches to SCP in business and policy.
The focus of this event drew on the results of an SCP conference held last year in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The agenda of this year’s conference in Vilnius included five main focal points. Firstly, trends of economic development and current business models and their influence on SCP were discussed. Secondly, a dialogue regarding orientation of consumers towards sustainable consumption was initiated. Thirdly, the exchange of views on good practice in SCP in different countries was carried out. Fourthly, recommendations for the implementation of the EU Action Plan on SCP were exchanged and finally the focus on SCP in Lithuania, at both a national and local level, including the collaboration between public authorities, business and civil society was addressed.
The programme involved presentations from numerous experts of varying disciplines from global trends in SCP (Michael Kundt, Wuppertal, CSCP) to patterns of SCP in Lithuania (Prof. Romualdas Juknys, Vytautas Magnus University, Lithuania). Other talks focused on Status of the SCP Action Plan (Jakub Wejchert, DG ENV, European Commission), Lessons learnt - The Slovenia meeting (Alenka Burja, Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning, Slovenia; Pawel Kazmierczyk, EEA), the past and the present of SCP (Prof. Maurie Cohen, University of Leeds, UK), SCP in business (Jörg Schafer, European Aluminium Association) or provided case studies of successful sustainability projects such as the Congestion Charge in London (James Mead, London Government UK) or Edinburgh as an example of a sustainable city (Courtney Peyton, Thirdwave UK).
The programme also included an arena conference addressing questions of economic growth and consumer behaviour in relation to SCP. A discussion of driving factors and barriers to SCP, as well as larger questions of whether a consumer society can be oriented to sustainable consumption at all was also addressed in the form of a round table discussion.
