BOOKLET FOR GREEN LIGHTING PROCUREMENT

In co-operation with the UNEP and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), the CSCP started developing a booklet for promoting procurement of efficient lighting in the United Nations offices and operations as well as in the public sector around the world. The CSCP will research on the current status of the procurement and application of efficient lighting (e.g. instalment of compact fluorescent lamps) in several UN agencies with help from the UNEP. The CSCP will also collect the experiences of UNEP’s Nairobi headquarters and Geneva office over the efficient lighting procurement and identify the lessons to be transferred to other public agencies.

The need to support concrete demonstration projects on SCP was highlighted in the 2nd International Expert Meeting on the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on SCP held in Costa Rica in September 2005. The 2nd European Conference under the Marrakech Process held in Berlin in December 2005 proposed to carry out a product panel on an energy-using product as a concrete follow-up action. Against this background, the CSCP investigated the gaps in the current global activities on energy efficient products and identified the area of energy efficient lighting in public buildings and spaces as one of the best “low-hanging fruits” to demonstrate the significant potential for improvement.

This publication is now published and circulated among UN agencies and other public authorities to encourage green public procurement.
