Although many issues regarding sustainable production have been addressed by business, supporting sustainable consumption in businesses is becoming an ever more important topic. On account of consumer movements, such as LOHAS (Lifestyles of health and sustainability), which involve making strategic consumption decisions, companies need to address expectations as well as concerns of consumers, who are environmentally aware and care for ethically produced products. Companies which engage in the topic of sustainable consumption, therefore, can help to promote more sustainable lifestyles, whilst opening up new market opportunities for themselves.
The CSCP was asked by the GTZ (Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit) to host a workshop series on the topic of sustainable consumption for the German UN Global Compact network. Four workshops took place within the workshop series. The first was a scoping workshop (October 2007), which introduced the topic to the participating companies and allowed participants to identify ‘hot spots’ within the topic area, which they wanted to deal with in the workshop series scheduled for 2008. In 2008, the following three workshops were carried out. The first was on creating awareness for "sustainable consumption" in-house and the contribution of different business functions towards promoting sustainable consumption (February 2008), the second was about sustainable consumption in global supply chains and in new markets (June 2008), and the third included information about best practices of sustainable consumption (October 2008). The workshops incorporated impulse presentations from business as well as stakeholders from NGO or politics, followed by participatory dialogues. The workshop series is supported by an advisory group consisting of Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), Henkel KGaA, German Aluminium Association (GDA) and Volkswagen AG.
